David A. Kalkstein
Hi! I’m Dave. I’m a researcher at the California Civil Rights Department. Prior joining the ranks of civil servants, I was a postdoctoral research scientist in social psychology at Stanford University. I received my PhD in Social Psychology from NYU, with a minor in quantitative psychology.
Throughout my career, I have sought to both build basic social psychological theory and apply theory to address pressing social issues related to education, intergroup relations, equality, and well-being. In the past, I have developed socio-cognitive models for understanding social perception and social influence. In ongoing work, my collaborators and I are developing interventions—both intimate and large-scale—that leverage psychological theory to affect real-world change. Finally, as a researcher at the California Civil Rights Department, I am focused on translating insights from social and behavioral science to develop policies that uphold and protect the civil rights of all individuals within the state.
